🎤WE MADE A PODCAST?!✨ Introducing the #StrivingArtistPodcast, a show for creatives working towards big goals! ~Listen w/ the link in my profile~
.
Pull up a seat and listen to @stefankunz and I have candid conversations about making art, making a living and making it all work as a modern-day artist ✏️🙌🏽
.
The first 2 episodes are now LIVE, and we’ll be dropping a new episode weekly. Put it on while you commute to work, do things around the house, or if you’re a freelancer who needs some virtual company while you get shit done 🙋🏻‍♀️
.
Have questions you want us to answer in the podcast? Suggestions for topics we should cover? We’d love to hear from you! We’re totally new to this podcast thing (but that didn’t stop us from giving it a try). It would mean the world to us if you gave it a listen and let us know what you think 😊
.
👋🏽 In the rare case you aren’t familiar with @stefankunz…let me introduce ya! He’s an incredible lettering artist based in Zurich whose clever work will make a great addition to your feed. We met in-person for the first time at AdobeMAX in 2017 and hit it off immediately because we’re both artists with business brains. Our conversations were so good and juicy that we decided it wasn’t fair to keep them to ourselves…so The Striving Artist podcast was born ♥️
.
We had so much fun developing this idea over the last few months, and we hope you enjoy it! ✨

#AdobePartner | So I have this theory that finding your style as an artist is kinda like finding your favorite ice cream flavors! 🍦✏️✨ You have to try *a lot* of flavors to figure out which ones you like best, but eating a bunch of free samples of ice cream sounds pretty fun, right? Then so should trying out a bunch of different styles, mediums and ideas in your work! 😛
.
To celebrate this delicious idea, I painted this piece in #AdobeFresco, a new creative iPad app from @AdobeDrawing. I'm obsessed with its Live brushes that paint like real watercolor and oil paints 🎨(aka how I got all of that yummy texture in this piece). Swipe to see a time-lapse of my process 👈🏽👀👈🏽
.
Okay, back to the ice cream thing: once you find a flavor you can't get enough of, order a family-size tub of it and then go find other people who love it too!👯‍♀️ Don't worry about the people who don't want a scoop of what you're dishing out; different people like different flavors at different times, and you can't please everyone (yup, even vanilla isn't universally loved) 💕
✨Good News Part 1✨ I got to design a t-shirt for @elizabethwarren!!! And so did badass lettering artists @jessicahische and @simonandmoose! Head to ewar.ren/quote-series to check out the shirts and get a cute discount with the code LAUREN15
~
✨Good News Part 2✨ I’m sharing the ENTIRE design process with you here! Swipe 👈🏽 to see the nitty gritty details of how client work like this gets made…sketches, feedback, revisions and all (complete with handwritten notes!).
~
Why am I sharing this? Because when I was just starting out as a freelance lettering artist, I would’ve (almost) killed to sneak a peek of an experienced artist’s process when working with clients. Not just hear about hypothetical client scenarios, but see REAL client work and REAL feedback and REAL solutions. So, here is my Friday gift to all of you freelancers out there. I hope you find it helpful or insightful!
~
Question: if you could sit at my desk with me for an entire workday, what would you hope to learn from me? Leave a comment below with the #1 thing you’ve always wanted to know about working as a freelance illustrator or lettering artist. I’ll try to answer as many as I can this weekend 🙋🏻‍♀️💕
~
Special thanks to @maggiooooooooooooooooo for the stellar art direction and to my studio’s first full-time designer @kristhecreative for the help on this project! (Yup, you heard it here first hehe. Official Good News Part 3 announcement coming soon ☺️)

Creative freelancers - are you promoting your work & services enough?🤔 Probably not, but neither am I! This week’s new #HOMwork assignment to advertise your creative services on a sign as if they were specials on a restaurant menu board aims to fix that (don’t know what #HOMwork is? Scroll to the bottom of this caption👇🏽). As artists, many of us LOVE the process of creating but hate the promoting part...so let me go first and show you that it’s not so bad 🙋🏻‍♀️
.
“HELLO my name is Lauren and I’m an expert at making brands stand out with hand lettering and creative marketing. My client list includes beloved brands like @target, @adobe, @vans @refinery29…and hopefully yours someday 😊. Have a project that could benefit from a hand lettered touch or partnership with me? Send an email with project details to 💌hello@homsweethom.com to get the ball rolling! (P.S. Ad art directors: if a last-minute holiday campaign gets sold through and you need the work done in a comically short timeframe, still send me an email! It’ll co$t, but as someone who used to work in advertising…I totally get it & I’m here for you 😅)”
.
Often times, artists hesitate to do this kind of direct self-promotion because they think it's spamming their audience (but trust me, it's not to most people!). People follow you because they WANT to see your work and hear about YOU. The more you start believing this, the easier self-promotion will feel 👍🏽. Plus, getting creative with my concepts for self-promotion pieces (like this assignment does) makes me motivated to create the promo and even makes me excited (instead of nervous) to post it 🏆
.
Wtf is #HOMwork, you ask? It’s a FREE weekly creative challenge that I email out to a community of 29,000 artists every Friday morning. ✨Sign up with the first link in my profile or at homsweethom.com/subscribe to join us!✨ People post their completed assignment on Instagram using the hashtag #HOMwork, and I feature my favorite posts in my Story throughout the week 👏🏽🏆

I painted this mural in honor of all the immigrants who’ve helped America grow 🌿 & the people who help promote and defend their rights at the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. @the_ilrc is a national nonprofit that works with and educates immigrants, community organizations, and the legal sector to build a democratic society that values diversity and the rights of all people ✊
.
On July 8th, 1952, my grandma arrived at Los Angeles Airport from Hong Kong. She was 15 years old and her father, who had already been working as a truck driver in LA, wanted to bring her to the US so she could have access to more education and opportunity (like any father would).
.
Instead of being allowed to go home with her father from the airport, my grandma was promptly taken to Terminal Island and held in a immigrant detention center because they were ‘still processing her paperwork’…even though her family had gotten all the necessary paperwork approved prior to her arrival. She ended up spending 79 days in detention before she was allowed to go home 🤷🏻‍♀️
.
From there, she enrolled in 10th grade and flourished academically. She went to college (first city college and then USC) and majored in mathematics. There, she met my grandpa. They got married, got jobs, started a family, and bought a house…the American dream ✨🇺🇸
.
I had the privilege of pursuing my creative dreams because my grandparents + their parents were brave enough to make the journey to pursue a better life for them & their families. My life and my career are a direct product of @the_ilrc’s belief that immigrants share a common vision with all Americans: a productive, happy and healthy life for themselves and their families ♥️
.
✏️Do you know any part of your family’s immigration story? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below! And if you don’t know about it, I encourage you to ask your family members about it, especially if you’re lucky enough to still have a grandparent around. Special thanks to my badass grandma for graciously sharing her story with me, my painting assistants @bloodygirlgang and @freshletters, and to Manny at @the_ilrc for making this project happen 🏆🏆🏆
