THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE - signing off

This is the last HOMwork assignment I’ll ever send.

I usually make December a low-work month, so normally, this is where I would promise to meet you enthusiastically in January with a collection of new prompts.

But as I’ve been gearing up for culinary school and figuring out what’s next for Hom Sweet Hom (the biz), I’ve realized it’s time for HOMwork to end in order to make room for new adventures.

I WILL be back in 2022, with new projects, ideas, and things to explore.

Stay subscribed if you’re curious about this next chapter. Unsubscribe if you’re not (no hard feelings here).

Whether you’ve done one assignment or all of them (looking at you, @jennofeve!) I want to thank you so much for participating these last few years

So to celebrate this goodbye, this week’s assignment is all about sign offs.

For as long as I can remember, my grandma has had little catch phrases that she likes to say to us when we leave each other.

The phrase changes from time to time, depending on what’s going on in the world (or in her life).

It was “Be good, Be happy, Be well” for years - pretty much the whole time I’ve been helming Hom Sweet Hom.

In 2020, my grandma changed her signoff to “Guard yourself well” and I remember being surprised by the change to a long-standing phrase.

But the change also made sense because it reflected a shift in the ways we were living and the kinds of challenges we were facing that year.

And I realized I wanted to start doing the same kind of thing: have a phrase to use when it’s time to say goodbye, whether parting for a few days or for a long time.

There’s something wonderful about having more than just “peace out” to share with someone.

It’s kind of like a wish for the future. A little verbal good luck charm, if you will.

'You Deserve Something Delicious Today' hand-lettering by Lauren Hom

Your assignment: Create a design or a lettering piece based on your personal, year-end sign off.

Thought starters: Reflect on the last year and give it a kind of forward-looking “wrap up” - something that closes the year in a way that encourages natural reflection.

Try to avoid the Ron Burgundy version of a signoff. Although “Stay classy, San Diego” is great for a news program, it doesn’t communicate anything about the speaker and it doesn't really challenge the audience, either.

Think about what to say to your audience (aka: strangers on the internet haha) that will carry them through the conclusion of one year and the start of a new one.

Don’t forget to tag me @homsweethom and use the #HOMwork & #HOMwork2021 hashtag when you post on Instagram. I love looking through your excellent creations and sharing a few of my favs every week in my IG Stories.

Again, thank you so much for being a part of this chapter of my creative journey.

See you very, very soon :)

Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
