WEEK 32 - wordplay all day
It feels like 2021 is zooming by! There are only a few more HOMwork assignments left before the year comes to an end so I’ve decided I’m going to close out with stuff I really love.
This week is about one of my evergreen favorites: alliteration.
The writing and lettering I’ve done over the years for Hom Sweet Hom has taught me that wordplay (in general) is a great way to make my message stand out.
Whether it’s puns or rhyme or alliteration, including wordplay makes any message a little more “sticky” because it shifts language just a little bit from the norm, which makes our brains perk up and pay better attention.
We just did puns, so it seems like a no-brainer to follow up with another wordplay classic.
This HOMwork assignment is all about alliteration: an absolutely awesome avenue for achieving your artistic ambitions.
Alliteration is two or more words with the same first letter (or sound).
Because it makes our brains pay extra attention, alliteration is a useful way to create a memorable phrase, communicate an important message, or just get your creative wheels turning!
Your assignment: Create an alliterative phrase for a day of the week, then letter or illustrate it.
Thought starters: My “Manic Monday” example is inspired by the classic song by The Bangles
Mondays, the official start of the work week even in this era of working from home, are still just as manic as they were back in the mid 80s when that song was released!
Here are some other well-known examples of alliterative days of the week:
Taco Tuesday
Throwback Thursday
Freaky Friday
Caption ideas: If your own alliterative phrase is specific (or inspired by a specific event or practice) include some background info or a story to explain why/how you came up with it.
For instance, Cinema Sunday sounds pretty general, and it totally can be a general phrase if that’s what feels right for you.
But maybe your Cinema Sunday involves watching an obscure, foreign-language film while trying out an obscure food or beverage.
Whether you go specific or general, explain how or why you came up with your alliterative day of the week and (engagement bonus!) invite others to share how they would interpret (or celebrate) the day.
