Hello and welcome to Week 9 of #HOMwork!
Before we get started. A TON of you have asked to see a replay of my @goodtype livestream where I walked you through my process of adding shading and dimension to my lettering on my iPad. It was *supposed* to be a limited-time video, but I've decided to share the playback just for participants of this lovely little challenge to say thanks for being such an active and inspiring community.
Okay! And now for your assignment this week.
Your assignment this week is to draw a made-up award that you'd totally win if it was real. Based on the very first lesson I teach in my popular online course, Passion to Paid, this assignment aims to help you dig deep and start pinpointing where you shine. For example, take my incredible ability to nap for 10x longer than planned. It's a gift, I know.
Here are a few example ideas to get you started:
World's best Drunk Food Maker
Miss Procrastination 2018 (could be a beauty pageant sash)
Gold Medal in Splitting the Bill at Dinner with Friends
#1 Pep Talk Giver
World Record for Time Spent Holding in a Fart in Yoga Class
Get creative with your visuals! Think trophies, medals, ribbons, sashes, certificates, badges, and more. There's tons of room for experimentation with this brief, which makes me *so excited* to see the end results.
So much of the creative career hustle focuses on trying to win awards for our work (especially in NYC where I started my career), so this week I want you to shift gears and rediscover all of the awesome/weird/outstanding talents you possess that don't have much to do with your real job.
For example, you might be a Photoshop master, but you might also be an expert at making people laugh when they’re having a bad day. You might have spent four years studying in college to be at the top of your class, but you might also have spent four years perfecting your famous margarita recipe that wins over everyone, every time.
You've already heard me talk about this, but embracing your personality and interests are SO important in creating a life and career you enjoy. By using YOUR wants & needs as the core of your business and art, you’ll be more likely to build a career around the things that YOU enjoy instead of focusing your time and energy making things that others enjoy.
Knowing exactly who you are as a person and what you bring to the table as a creator is the foundation for establishing your voice as an artist, and we want that voice to shine through the body of work you create. I hope that this assignment (along with the previous ones in this challenge) will help guide you towards the kind of work you want to be known for.
The second part of the challenge is to post your award to yourself on Instagram with the hashtag #HOMwork so we can see what everyone created. In the caption, tell us why you deserve to win this award by sharing a personal story. Or if you're feeling extra creative, write a heart-felt acceptance speech and post it as your caption.
Make sure to complete & post your work before the next challenge comes out if you want a chance to be featured in my Story! Really looking forward to seeing what awards you give to yourselves. This should be a fun one :)
PS If you get stuck on figuring out what you're so freakin' good at you deserve an award for it, ask a friend or family member to make some suggestions. Sometimes people who love us can pinpoint these things way more easily than we can!
