Hello and welcome to Week 38 of #HOMwork!
This week, we have a fun prompt from my friend Becca Courtice (some of you may know her as @thehappyevercrafter). She’s a modern calligraphy “do-er” and teacher based out of Ottawa, Canada.
Becca focuses largely on teaching calligraphy – both in person and online – and has created a huge community of aspiring calligraphers around her free course/challenge called ShowMeYourDrills. Becca is also known for making learning fun... which leads us into this week's HOMwork!
Growing up, my Dad had the most cringe-worthy jokes. He'd tell the classic Dad ones, like:
Me: "I'm hungry!"
Dad: "Nice to meet you hungry, I'm Jeff."
Me: "Dad, you know what?"
Dad: "No, but I know his brother, Who!"
And as much as I haaaated* them as a kid, I realize now that Dad jokes (or just BAD jokes, you could say) play this bigger role in my life that I would seriously miss if it were gone.
Not just because they came from my Dad, who got them from his Dad, who got them from his Dad, making them something I naturally I cherish... but just because laughter serves me in my life in so many ways. Laughter breaks the ice with new people, opening up deeper new relationships. Laughter makes me feel better when I'm sad. Laughter is how I connect to my audience on a more personal level. AAAAND, laughter is the whole reason I have 6-pack abs.
(K that last part is a lie.)
But bad jokes have truly become a real part of my life and my business.
I love using dumb jokes as a way to remind people to loosen up, enjoy the small things in life, and LAUGH – most importantly, at ourselves.
*Just a quick note about this- I strongly believe that the people who claim to "hate" Dad jokes are secretly the ones who love them most. Cause I used to be one of those people– and look at me now! I can out-Dad some of the Daddiest Dads out there.
Your joke can be as simple or elaborate as you like. It can be punny, sarcastic, dry, or foul- whatever your style of humor may be! It could be strictly lettered, or it could also be illustrated. Get creative! Just remember... the more eye-rolls it gets, the better!
