Hey HOMwork friends, happy Friday!
(If this is your first time joining us, take a peek at our Challenge Archive for all previous assignments.)
This week we have the extremely talented Casey Ligon as a guest teacher! Casey is a lettering artist from Florida who makes crazy, fun, wait-how-are-we-gonna-make-this-happen content for advertising agencies all over the US. Her past clients include Adobe, AMC, McDonald’s, Publix, KIND snacks, Hallmark, and so many more.
Back in middle school, I wasn't the star student in my art class. My work didn’t have any smooth shading and my favorite drawing tool was a mechanical pencil (*gasp*). One day my art teacher told me I better, "Find a new hobby".
Choosing a career in art is hard--there are so many opinions thrown at you from seemingly well-meaning people. It can be hard to navigate the difference between constructive criticism and just plain negative energy. (Looking at you middle school art teacher). Because of that negative comment, I ended up putting my artistic talents on the back burner instead of pursuing them seriously.
When I look back on that middle school me, I wish I could reach out and tell myself something more positive. Now I know better than to listen to the haters, and instead of letting comments like that get to me I use them as motivation to keep pursuing what I know is the right path for me. Which brings us to this week’s assignment!

"Find a new hobby" becomes "Keep at it!"
"There are no jobs in art" becomes "Do what you love"
"We can't pay you" becomes "You're worth it"
It's important to use positive thoughts and words to encourage yourself and others, particularly if your style or methods don't fit in with the status quo. I still use mechanical pencils to this day and now I'm paying the bills with the art that I create.
Caption Idea: Tell us about a time someone told you to give up but you decided to stick with it anyway, and what happened next.
