Last week, Last week, FabFitFun asked a bunch of female illustrators to work for "exposure”. For a multi-million dollar company whose marketing angle is female empowerment, this move was especially offensive to me as a female entrepreneur. You can read more about it here.
They just hosted an Instagram contest to “empower women” by posting a photo of a woman who inspires you with the hashtag #FollowHerLead. Well, ladies, I’m asking you to follow MY lead: Let’s speak up for creative women everywhere by taking over their hashtag.
I’ve partnered with Ladies Get Paid to run our OWN Instagram contest that truly empowers women. The winner will receive a $500 USD scholarship to get her creative idea/project off the ground, a 1 hour creative consultation with me, and a 1 hour strategy & marketing consultation with Ladies Get Paid founder Claire Wasserman. Here are the details:
1) Post a photo of yourself (because YOU’RE inspiring) holding up a sign with something that someone has said that was offensive and questioned your creative value, like the photos above.
2) Share the story in the caption and then tell us why you value your work and yourself as a creative woman.
3) Use the hashtags: #FollowHerLead #LadiesGetPaid & #fuckthewagegap
4) Tag @ladiesgetpaid @homsweethom and @fabfitfun in the photo
The contest will run from now until 11:59 EST on November 20th. Any woman, of any age, anywhere in the world, can enter. Winner will be chosen at random and notified via direct message on November 21st. Winner must claim her prize within 48 hours.
Over 160 women responded to my recent Instagram post with heartbreaking stories of being undervalued and underpaid as creative females. Thank you for standing up and being brave - there is so much strength in shared experiences and knowing you’re not alone in the fight. I hope you’ll join me by entering the contest and spreading the message that IT’S ABOUT TIME that #ladiesgetpaid!
P.S. Need a sign? Feel free to print out some these common offenses and snap a photo with them:
